Almonds Roasted snack almonds use a different guide from shell-specific almonds. FoodKeeper lists 1–2 weeks in the pantry or 4 weeks refrigerated after opening roasted almonds, for quality. Follow any more restrictive package directions.
• 🥜
Walnuts FoodKeeper groups walnuts in or out of the shell: 2–4 weeks in the pantry from purchase, 9–12 months refrigerated from purchase, or 24 months frozen from purchase, for quality. California Walnut Board separately recommends freezing when planning storage of a month or longer.
• 🍇
Raisins For plain dried raisins, FoodKeeper gives a pantry quality guide of 6 months from purchase. Its separate opened-package guides are 1 month in the pantry or 6 months refrigerated after opening. These are not extra allowances to add together.
• 🍫
Cocoa powder Keep unsweetened cocoa powder dry and tightly sealed. FoodKeeper gives about 1 year in the pantry after opening for quality in its combined cocoa-and-cocoa-mixes category. Check the instructions for your actual cocoa; this broad category is not a safety deadline.
• 🥄
Baking soda For food-grade baking soda, FoodKeeper gives about 6 months in the pantry after opening for quality. King Arthur’s vinegar test checks leavening activity. ARM & HAMMER’s 30-day fridge-box replacement instruction concerns odor removal, not a baking-expiration clock.
• 🧈
Shortening For Crisco solid shortening, the unopened shelf-life clock runs from manufacture. Opened cans and sticks have different maker recommendations. These numerical endpoints are not expressly classified as quality or safety limits.
• 🫙
Pectin For conventional dry pectin, the practical question is whether it will still set properly: keep it cool and dry and use its package date. Opened liquid pectin is a separate case. Dry and liquid forms are not interchangeable in tested recipes.
• 🍫
Chocolate syrup Refrigerate standard commercial chocolate syrup after opening. FoodKeeper gives six months refrigerated from opening as a quality guide; follow your exact bottle’s instructions too.
• 🌾
Flaxseed Keep whole flaxseed sealed in a cool, dry cupboard. Linwoods’ Northern Ireland guidance says its cold-milled flaxseed typically stays fresh for approximately 45 days after opening when sealed and refrigerated.
• 🍎
Applesauce Refrigerate opened applesauce. FoodKeeper gives commercial jar or bulk applesauce seven–ten days after opening for quality; follow shorter package directions. That does not give a used single-serving pouch the same period. For its own cooked recipe, UW FoodWIse gives covered refrigerator leftovers up to one week; counting from preparation is our reading of the recipe’s leftover advice.
• 🫒
Olives Refrigerate opened olives and follow the product label. FoodKeeper gives olive-bar olives two weeks from purchase and packaged black or green olives two weeks after opening, both refrigerated quality guides. Mezzetta recommends continuous refrigeration and utensils, with three months after opening for best quality except Italian Castelvetrano, which has a one-month opening guide.
• 🥬
Sauerkraut Check whether your sauerkraut was sold shelf-stable or refrigerated. FoodKeeper’s high-acid canned category names sauerkraut and gives five–seven refrigerator days after opening for quality. Bubbies is always refrigerated: its maker gives three–four months after opening for quality and taste, with the contents kept under brine. Follow the exact product’s instructions and date.
• 🧂
Salt Plain culinary salt itself has no fixed expiry when kept clean and dry. Morton gives separate recommendations for pouring quality, iodine and seasonings, measured from manufacture. Check the exact product and its package code; buying, opening or transferring salt does not restart its age.
• 🍲
Bouillon cubes Dry bouillon cubes and broth made from them need different handling. FoodKeeper gives separate pantry quality references from purchase and opening; they are not added together. Knorr US gives label-led flavor advice, while one specific Knorr UK product has a production-based specification.
• 🥜
Peanuts First separate dry peanuts from home-boiled leftovers, then check shell state, roasting and whether the package is open. FoodKeeper has different purchase and opening quality references. Match the actual product’s instructions; home-boiled peanuts need prompt refrigerated leftover handling.
• 🥣
Gelatin powder Separate dry flavored dessert mix, unflavored gelatin powder and a hydrated dessert. FoodKeeper gives flavored mix ten to twelve pantry months from purchase and three to four pantry months after opening as quality references. Use the exact label for unflavored powder; dry-mix periods do not apply to prepared desserts.
• 🍯
Molasses Culinary molasses needs its own product instructions. Grandma’s unsulfured sugarcane molasses does not need refrigeration after opening. Crosby’s Canadian storage statement has an unspecified starting event, so it cannot supply a fresh opening allowance. Pomegranate molasses, sorghum syrup and diluted homemade syrups are outside this guide.
• 🍤
Cocktail sauce Choose the original commercial tomato-and-horseradish condiment before using a bottle reference. McCormick’s Golden Dipt US sauce needs refrigeration after opening and must not be frozen. Homemade sauce, refrigerated fresh sauce and a dish containing seafood need their own instructions.
• 🍋
Lemon curd Lemon curd needs product- and recipe-specific storage. Bonne Maman jars, King Arthur’s July 2026 refrigerator recipe and NCHFP’s complete canning and freezer recipes have different instructions. The NCHFP period after thawing belongs only to its exact freezer recipe kept refrigerated after thawing.
• 🌱
Wasabi Choose the product before following a storage method. Wasabi paste or powder can be a formulated condiment; genuine fresh wasabi is a rhizome. They are not simply the same botanical food in wet and dry forms. S&B’s paste and powder directions and Real Wasabi’s rhizome guidance stay separate below.
• 🫙
Black bean sauce This page covers commercial Chinese-style fermented black-soybean sauce, including garlic versions. Kikkoman US recommends using its Black Bean Sauce with Garlic within one month after opening, refrigerated, for best quality. FoodKeeper’s longer category range does not extend that exact-product recommendation.
• 🫙
Capers Capers are cured flower buds. DeLallo advises refrigerating opened brined capers, keeping them submerged in their brine and tightly sealed. Salt-packed capers and portions rinsed for cooking need separate handling; these sources supply no universal opened-caper keeping period.
• 🌽
Cornmeal Match cornmeal storage to the milling description on the bag. FoodKeeper treats regular/degerminated cornmeal differently from its stone-ground or blue category; these are quality references, not one interchangeable allowance.
• 🥣
Almond flour For Blue Diamond’s US blanched almond flour, the freshness reference runs from packing. Opening does not restart the printed date, and its freezer advice does not establish an extra allowance after that date.
• 🥣
Couscous Near East’s dry couscous date concerns flavor and quality in cool, dry storage. For prepared Near East couscous, the maker recommends no more than two refrigerated days for best results and freshness. Count from the original preparation as the FAQ context implies; Near East does not literally specify the start event. Its freezing caution concerns texture.
• 🌱
Sesame Seeds Keep whole sesame seeds dry and airtight. Bob’s exact white hulled product has reviewed best-keeping advice for refrigeration or freezing after opening. Raw seeds, toasted seeds and tahini have different storage evidence; this guide establishes no universal sesame-seed countdown.
• 🌱
Pumpkin Seeds For Bob’s Organic Pumpkin Seeds, keep an unopened bag cool and dry; refrigerate an opened bag and use a small working portion if accessed often. Fresh wet seeds from a pumpkin are outside this dry packaged-seed guidance. No general opening period is established.
• 🌻
Sunflower Seeds FoodKeeper distinguishes roasted shelled kernels from raw kernels and salted in-shell seeds. For roasted shelled kernels after opening, its freshness references are 3–4 pantry months or 7–8 refrigerator months. Use the package date for roasted salted in-shell seeds; those are not extra time allowances.
• 🥑
Avocado Oil Chosen Foods says its 100% Pure Avocado Oil can stay cool and dry without refrigeration. La Tourangelle recommends cool, dry storage for its avocado oil and use within six months of opening, subject to the can’s earlier printed expiration date. Refined, extra-virgin and blended products need their own maker directions.
• 🫙
Sesame Oil Kikkoman USA permits opened toasted sesame oil in a cool, dark cupboard. Kadoya’s Japanese FAQ gives an approximate 1–2 months after opening, depending on storage, and recommends upright, tightly capped storage in a dark place at 20°C±5, away from heat and moisture. La Tourangelle recommends use within six months of opening, subject to the can’s earlier printed expiration date; the inspected sources do not establish a storage location for its toasted sesame oil. Keep these maker instructions separate.
• 🌶️
Gochujang Sempio recommends refrigerating gochujang after opening to limit darkening. Follow your exact paste’s package directions and date. No universal opened-pack period is verified, and a prepared sauce or dip needs its own handling.
• 🧂
Nutritional Yeast Bragg recommends a cool, dark place such as a pantry or refrigerator for nutritional yeast. Follow the container date; no separate period after opening is verified here. Dried inactive seasoning and a moist sauce need different handling.
• 🍯
Agave Nectar Madhava recommends room-temperature storage for its agave, with no refrigeration needed even after opening. Follow the printed package date. This does not establish a universal opening period for other syrups or diluted preparations.
• 🌿
Nori (Dried Sheets) Keep plain dried nori sheets protected from heat, moisture and light. Yamamotoyama recommends an airtight container or bag with a food desiccant after opening, and refrigeration in hot, humid conditions. No exact opening period is verified.
• 🌾
Bulgur Bulgur is wheat that has been precooked, dried and cracked. Keep the dry grain airtight, cool and dry, following its package date. Once cooked at home, chill promptly and use within USDA’s general 3–4-day refrigerated leftover window, counted from the original cooking.
• 🍯
Barley Malt Syrup Eden advises keeping barley malt syrup in a glass container in the refrigerator after opening. Follow your exact jar’s label and original date. This maker instruction does not supply a universal elapsed opening period or apply to dry malt powder, brewing extract or diluted syrup.
• 🍯
Date Syrup Date Lady and D’vash permit pantry storage for their commercial date syrups. Keep Date Lady syrup airtight, at room temperature away from light and moisture, and avoid introducing water or used utensils. Follow the actual bottle’s date; no universal opening countdown is supplied.
• 🍯
Pomegranate Molasses Belazu’s UK 250 ml pomegranate molasses directs ambient storage and consumption within three months after opening. Keep the actual bottle’s date and handling instructions. This product-specific instruction does not establish a universal period for other formulations or homemade reductions.
• 🌾
Sorghum Keep dry food-grade sorghum grain airtight in a cool, dry place. Check the actual flour form and maker directions before choosing cold storage. Cooked sorghum needs prompt chilling and general 3-4-day refrigerated-leftover guidance; dry-grain estimates do not apply to it.
• 🌾
Farro Read the farro package: commercial farro may identify emmer, einkorn or spelt, and whole, semi-pearled or pearled processing changes the grain form. Keep dry grain airtight, cool and dry; whole-grain flour and cooked farro need separate handling. Farro is wheat.
• 🫙
Canned cranberry sauce Canned cranberry sauce, once opened, should be placed in the refrigerator. FoodKeeper provides a 1–2-week quality guide for opened canned cranberry sauce. Ocean Spray separately recommends up to two weeks, tightly covered and refrigerated, for its jellied or whole-berry sauce. Follow a shorter storage period if your own can gives one.
• 🍅
Tomato paste Refrigerate tomato paste after opening. FoodKeeper lists five days after opening as its general refrigerator quality guide. A specific resealable tube may have different instructions: Cento states 30–45 refrigerated days after opening for its 4.56 oz double-concentrated tube. Do not apply the tube period to an opened can or different brand.
• 🍯
Corn syrup Follow the label on your corn syrup. Karo permits its light and dark corn syrups to be kept at room temperature before and after opening, with the bottle closed. It recommends its Best By date for best results. Refrigeration is optional for those products and makes the syrup thicker; no universal after-opening countdown is established here.
• 🫙
Cashew Butter You should use your cashew-butter jar's storage instructions. FoodKeeper says cashew butter does not need refrigeration, but its three-month pantry entry does not specify a starting event. This guide will therefore not interpret it as three months after opening, purchase or manufacture.
• 🍚
Sugar Virginia Tech lists white granulated, brown and confectioners/powdered sugar as indefinite in the pantry when unopened and 18–24 months after opening as a general storage/quality reference. USU adds that moisture changes sugar texture and that commercial sugars resist microbial growth; keep each form sealed, cool, dry and away from odors without turning a quality guide into a safety countdown.
• 🍝
Dry Pasta Virginia Tech and NDSU list two pantry years unopened and one year opened for plain dried pasta. These are storage-quality references, not automatic safety expiries or extra years after a printed date. Keep pasta dry and airtight; cooked and fresh pasta need separate handling.
• 🍜
Dry egg noodles For commercially dried egg noodles, FoodKeeper lists two years from purchase and one to two months after opening in the pantry as quality references. Keep the noodles dry and protected, and follow the package. The opening period is much shorter than the separate guidance for dry pasta without eggs.
• 🍝
Fresh pasta Keep fresh pasta refrigerated. FoodKeeper’s general entry lists one to two days in the refrigerator and two months in the freezer as storage references. It does not identify a purchase, unopened or after-opening clock. Follow the exact product’s instructions, and keep homemade egg-noodle advice separate rather than combining the periods.
• 🍚
Dry brown rice Store dry brown rice in a cool, dry place in a tightly closed container, and follow its package date. Published quality estimates differ: FoodKeeper lists one year from purchase, while USA Rice describes about six months for brown rice. Neither figure guarantees the condition of a particular bag.
• 🌾
Dry quinoa Keep uncooked quinoa dry, protected and labeled. Published quality estimates differ substantially: FoodKeeper gives two to three years from purchase, while the Whole Grains Council gives four pantry months for intact quinoa. Follow the exact product’s instructions rather than treating either as a guaranteed shelf life.
• 🥣
Dry oats For its whole-grain oats category, FoodKeeper lists four months in the pantry and eight months in the freezer as quality references. Keep dry oats protected in a tightly closed container and follow their package. The source does not identify a purchase or after-opening clock, and prepared oatmeal needs different storage.
• 🌾
Whole-grain barley FoodKeeper gives dry whole-grain barley six months in the pantry and twelve months in the freezer as quality references. Check that the product is actually whole grain, keep it dry and protected, and follow the package. These are general storage fields, not specified periods after opening.
• 🌾
Buckwheat groats FoodKeeper lists two months in the pantry and four months in the freezer for whole-grain buckwheat. These are quality references for the dry ingredient, with no specified purchase or opening clock. Keep groats protected and follow the package; flour and cooked dishes need different guidance.
• 🌾
Millet grain FoodKeeper gives whole-grain millet two months in the pantry and four months in the freezer as quality references. Keep the dry grain protected and follow its package. The source does not define an opening or purchase clock, and its broad millet category does not establish a separate shelf life for every species or process.
• 🌾
Amaranth grain FoodKeeper lists four months in the pantry and eight months in the freezer for whole amaranth grain as quality references. Keep it dry, protected and clearly labeled, and follow the package. The source does not specify a purchase or opening clock; it is not a timer for every amaranth product.
• 🥜
Cashews Check whether your cashews are a general shelled product or a roasted snack. FoodKeeper lists two to four pantry weeks, six refrigerated months and twelve frozen months from purchase for shelled cashews. Its separate roasted-nut entry gives shorter opened guidance. Follow the matching preparation and package rather than choosing the longest period.
• 🥜
Macadamia nuts Keep shelled macadamias protected in a tightly closed container and follow the package. FoodKeeper gives two to four pantry weeks from purchase. Cold-storage estimates vary substantially between FoodKeeper and Australian Macadamias, so this guide keeps those references separate rather than promising one universal expiry date.
• 🥜
Pecans Pecan storage depends on preparation. FoodKeeper gives in-shell and shelled pecans two to four pantry weeks from purchase, with longer cold-storage references. Its chopped-pecan entry uses different, unspecified clocks. Keep the forms separate, use protective packaging and follow the exact product’s instructions.
• 🥜
Pistachios Keep dry edible pistachios protected and follow the package. FoodKeeper gives three pantry weeks from purchase, but its cold-storage fields contain conflicting guidance. The separate UC ANR cold-storage references below are quality guides with no specified opening clock, not guaranteed expiry dates.
• 🌲
Pine nuts FoodKeeper lists two to three weeks in the pantry, three months in the refrigerator and nine months in the freezer for pine nuts as quality references. It does not specify purchase or opening clocks. Follow the package, keep the nuts protected and use different guidance once they become pesto or another prepared food.
• 🥫
Chia Seeds Keep dry chia seeds in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends airtight storage because the seeds can become rancid or moldy. Once you soak them or mix them into milk or yogurt, refrigerate the preparation and stop using dry-seed storage guidance.
• 🫙
Prepared horseradish Keep opened prepared horseradish refrigerated and tightly covered. FoodKeeper gives jarred horseradish 3–4 months after opening as a quality guide. Your product’s label takes priority. Losing its sharp flavor can be an age-related quality change, but flavor alone cannot establish that a jar is safe.
• 🫙
Pickle relish Follow the exact pickle-relish label. Mt. Olive recommends refrigeration after opening for its products to preserve flavor and freshness. No universal after-opening month count is established here: the inspected FoodKeeper relish row gives purchase-based periods, which should not be relabeled as time after opening.
• 🫙
Jarred roasted red peppers Refrigerate opened jarred roasted red peppers and follow the product label. Mezzetta recommends using its Roasted Red Bell Peppers within 5–7 days after opening. Cento separately recommends using its roasted red peppers within seven days. These are named-product directions, not a universal rule for every pepper jar.
• 🫙
Sun-dried tomatoes Read the package first: dry-packed sun-dried tomatoes and tomatoes packed in oil do not share a single storage rule. Mezzetta recommends refrigerating its Sun Ripened Dried Tomatoes after opening and enjoying them within one month for best quality. Use your own product’s directions rather than applying that month to every bag or jar.
• 🫘
Dried split peas Store dried split peas in a cool, dark place, protected from moisture in an airtight container. FoodKeeper lists one year from purchase and one year after opening as pantry quality references. These are alternative source clocks, not two years to add together. Illinois Extension also describes about a year of peak quality and says split peas do not need soaking before cooking.
• 🥒
Commercial Cucumber Pickles Check whether the commercial jar is shelf-stable or sold refrigerated, then follow its label. FoodKeeper’s generic pickles row gives one pantry year from purchase and one to three refrigerator months after opening; it does not identify every product subtype.
• 🍮
Caramel Sauce Refrigerate homemade caramel sauce made with dairy and follow its exact recipe. Commercial products differ: check the label for the specific bottle and do not transfer a candy, milk-spread, or other brand's storage period.
• 🫘
Dried Beans (Black, Kidney, Navy, Pinto, and Similar) For common whole dry beans such as black, kidney, navy, and pinto, prevent moisture and pests with a cool, dry storage place and a tightly closed container. Soaked and cooked beans need separate refrigeration or freezing guidance.
• 🥥
Coconut Flour Store coconut flour sealed in a cool, dry cupboard away from heat and light. Follow your brand after opening: Copra says to refrigerate its flour and use it within 10 days of opening, with the endpoint unstated. This is a named product instruction, not a universal interval.
• 🌱
Tapioca Starch (Tapioca Flour) Tapioca starch, often labeled tapioca flour, is a dry cassava starch. Keep it sealed, cool, and dry; do not transfer guidance for tapioca pearls, cassava flour, or cooked tapioca pudding. Follow the specific product’s package date and directions. No universal household duration is assigned.
• 🌿
Hemp Seeds (Hemp Hearts) Hemp hearts are hulled seeds; whole hemp seeds keep the outer shell. Keep either form sealed and dry, then follow its package. Manitoba Harvest recommends refrigeration after opening for its hemp hearts to extend freshness. That is a maker’s quality recommendation, not a universal safety timer.
• 🌱
Poppy Seeds (Culinary) Store dry culinary poppy seeds sealed, cool, dark, and away from heat. Illinois Extension’s 3–4-year statement is a quality period for commercially packaged seeds stored properly, with the clock origin unstated. Waitrose gives its own opened product a one-month consume instruction; endpoint unstated. Follow your pack.
• 🥥
Desiccated Coconut (Shredded or Flaked, Dry Packaged) Dry packaged desiccated coconut is not fresh coconut or coconut milk. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard and follow the label. Edward & Sons says refrigeration after opening is optional but recommended for a fresher product; no universal pantry, fridge, or freezer duration is established.
• 🌿
Whole Vanilla Beans Nielsen-Massey recommends storing its whole beans sealed at room temperature, away from heat and light. Its two-year best-before period runs from production, not purchase or opening; follow the printed date. The maker says refrigeration may encourage mold.
• 🧄
Garlic Powder Store garlic powder sealed and dry, away from stove steam, sinks, heat, and sunlight. McCormick says garlic products readily absorb moisture and cake, while ordinary aging can also harden dry spice. A dry clump alone does not show that the jar is spoiled; inspect for moisture damage or contamination and follow the label.
• 🧁
Cream of Tartar Keep the powder sealed in a cool, dry cupboard. McCormick lists a 1,440-day shelf life for its 25 oz Culinary product when handled properly, but does not state the clock anchor or endpoint. This is not a timer for retail jars or other brands.
• 🍜
Instant Ramen Noodle Meals (Dry, Packaged) For unopened dry instant ramen, follow the package date and keep the product in a cool, dry place. Maruchan says conditions may reduce soup quality but does not publish one universal shelf-life number. Once cooked, refrigerate leftovers within two hours and use the general three-to-four-day cooked-leftover guidance; the dry package date no longer applies.
