Quick answer
Use your frozen waffles’ package date as the quality target, and keep them at 0°F (−18°C) or below. Properly handled food kept continuously frozen can remain safe indefinitely, although flavor and texture decline. A best-by date cannot establish whether a box thawed in a warm car.
This guide covers commercially frozen waffles. Homemade leftovers, shelf-stable waffles, batter and waffles with perishable toppings need their own handling advice.

Start with the product
| What you have | What to do |
|---|---|
| Unopened keep-frozen box | Keep frozen; follow its date and preparation directions. |
| Open inner bag, waffles still frozen | Close securely and return promptly to the freezer. |
| Ordinary Eggo waffles | Keep frozen until use, as the maker directs. |
| Topped or filled waffle | Follow the requirements of the whole prepared food. |
Can they go in the refrigerator?
Check the exact line. Eggo says all its waffles, pancakes and toasts should stay frozen until use except Belgian Style Street Waffles. Its FAQ gives that named exception up to 15 days at room temperature or 35 days refrigerated.
Those numbers do not apply to ordinary Eggo waffles, every Belgian-style waffle or other brands. The FAQ does not establish an after-opening window for that exception; follow your package. Moving an ordinary keep-frozen box to the fridge for convenient breakfasts is not the same as following a permitted storage method.
Protect an opened bag
Close the inner bag tightly. If it no longer seals, use an airtight freezer-suitable bag or container. Keep the product name, date, lot code and heating directions; a photograph of the carton is useful when freezer space is tight.
Opening does not supply a new universal countdown or restart the printed date. An opening date is helpful for rotation, not proof that the food stayed cold. Keep an appliance thermometer in the freezer rather than relying only on the control dial.
Freezer burn means moisture loss and poorer quality, not a safety hazard by itself. It cannot clear separate thawing or contamination concerns. Discard moldy or suspicious-smelling food; normal appearance cannot establish safety.
What if they thawed during an outage?
Eggo permits refreezing its products when they still contain ice crystals or have been held at 40°F (4°C) or below, with possible texture changes. A cold reading after the freezer restarts does not reveal an earlier warm spell.
FoodSafety.gov’s emergency chart lists plain waffles, pancakes and bagels as refreezable in both frozen-food columns, including exposure to 40°F or above for more than two hours. That category-specific emergency advice is not a countertop storage plan. Custard- or cheese-filled pastries and frozen meals have different rules. Follow stricter instructions for your particular waffle.
FAQs
Are waffles unsafe the day after the best-by date?
Not automatically. US best-by wording concerns quality. Storage history, contamination, recalls and the actual package instructions still matter.
Can I use the plain-waffle rule for whipped-cream toppings?
No. Perishable toppings need refrigeration. Use the general two-hour limit outside refrigeration, shortened to one hour above 90°F (32°C).
Should I thaw waffles before heating?
Use the product’s preparation instructions. Eggo’s ordinary waffle methods start with frozen waffles; do not replace those directions with a guessed thawed cooking time.
