Quick answer
Refrigerate an opened, untouched portion promptly and follow the exact package's after-opening instructions. Food a baby has eaten from directly is different: saliva can contaminate the remainder. Serve a little in a separate clean dish, refrigerate the untouched original container and discard food left in the feeding dish. FDA baby-food handling advice
This guide covers store-bought purées in jars, tubs and pouches. Formula, breast milk, dry cereal and homemade batches have separate guidance.

A general chart is a starting point
| Opened, untouched food | General refrigerated guidance |
|---|---|
| Strained fruit or vegetables | Two to three days. |
| Strained meat or eggs | One day. |
| Meat-and-vegetable combinations | One to two days. |
| A product with a shorter label period | Follow the shorter period. |
These federal-chart periods assume safe handling and refrigeration at 40°F (4°C) or below. They are not a promise about every recipe or package. Use the shorter applicable period when a product direction and general guidance differ. FoodSafety.gov baby-food chart
Pouches can have a shorter window
Gerber's published FAQ gives 24 hours for its opened pouches, with the cap replaced and refrigeration within one hour of opening. It lists two days for unused portions in opened jars and tubs. These examples do not cover a package your child has eaten from directly. Read the current pack rather than transferring a number from another product. Gerber FAQ
For meat purées, keep the federal chart's shorter one-day period in mind even if a brand gives two days. Beech-Nut's pouch guidance directs parents to the particular label; its two-to-three-day range is not permission to choose three days for every pouch. Beech-Nut pouch guidance
Write down both opening date and time. A 24-hour allowance beginning at lunchtime ends at lunchtime the next day, not tomorrow evening. Shelf-stable before opening does not mean shelf-stable afterward.
Keep the portion you save untouched
Wash your hands and use clean serving utensils. Spoon or squeeze a small portion into a dish before feeding. Close the original package and refrigerate it promptly. If more is needed, use a clean serving utensil rather than the spoon from your baby's mouth.
For pouches, the same conservative routine avoids mouth contact with food you hope to save. If your baby has already eaten directly from the package, do not assign its remainder the untouched portion's refrigerator period. Public-health guidance on jars and pouches
FAQs
What if it was left out?
For food needing refrigeration, FDA's general limit is two hours, or one hour above 90°F (32°C). A shorter product direction still applies. Refrigerate promptly; these limits are not waiting targets.
Is a normal smell enough to keep it?
No. Harmful bacteria may not cause an obvious smell or appearance. Discard food with unsafe or uncertain handling rather than tasting it to check.
What should I check before opening a jar?
Reject a raised safety button, a lid that fails to pop, chipped glass or a rusty lid, following FDA's advice. A printed date cannot clear damaged packaging.
