Yes, dried goji berries can go bad. Moisture getting into the bag is a particular concern. For an unopened pack, the printed best-before date and storage instructions are your starting point. Once opened, use the brand's advice rather than assuming every bag lasts a year.
For example, Gerbs gives its dried goji berries 2–3 months after opening in a cool, dry climate, or 4–6 months refrigerated. These are product-specific quality periods, not a safety guarantee for another brand or a poorly stored bag. Gerbs storage guidance
This guide covers the plain, packaged red-orange dried goji berries also sold as wolfberries. Fresh berries, juice, powders, supplements and soaked berries need different guidance.

How long do dried goji berries last?
Start with the information on your own package. Here is how to interpret the available manufacturer guidance:
| Product and condition | Period or instruction | When the clock starts |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened packaged dried goji berries | Follow the printed best-before date and stated storage conditions | Use the printed calendar date; purchase does not start a new period |
| Gerbs, opened and kept airtight in a cool, dry room | Up to 2–3 months | First opening |
| Gerbs, opened and refrigerated airtight | 4–6 months for quality | First opening |
| Other brands, opened | Follow any after-opening directions on the package | First opening, unless the label specifies otherwise |
The opened-bag figures are from Gerbs' product instructions.
Longer shelf-life figures need context. Navitas says most of its products have an 18-month shelf life from manufacturing. That is a company-wide statement, not a promise that an opened bag of goji berries will last another 18 months. Check the date stamped on the bag. Navitas shelf-life FAQ
Moving an old bag into the refrigerator does not restart the clock. An estimate in this table does not override a shorter instruction on your package. Write the opening date on the pouch, and keep the original best-before date if you transfer the berries to a jar.
Do they need to be refrigerated after opening?
That depends on the product. Navitas recommends a cool, dark, dry location and fully resealing its products; its general storage FAQ does not require refrigeration for goji berries. Other manufacturers recommend chilling. Follow the directions on the pack you have. Navitas storage FAQ
Sevenhills gives more specific advice for preventing clumps: keep its berries below 20°C (68°F), away from sunlight and heat, with refrigeration preferred. A cupboard that gets hot beside the oven is not the cool storage space that advice describes. Sevenhills clumping guidance
If you refrigerate the berries, close them in a dry, airtight container. Keep the refrigerator at 4°C (40°F) or below, and put the opening date somewhere you can see it without taking the lid off. FDA storage advice
My goji berries have clumped together. Are they spoiled?
Clumping alone does not settle the question. Sevenhills explains that heat and humidity can make goji berries fuse together without being spoiled. For ordinary clumping, it suggests chilling the packet for a few days, then shaking or gently separating the berries. Sevenhills
There is an important limit to that advice: it is not a way to rescue a wet or moldy packet. Dried foods can absorb moisture during storage and spoil, and the National Center for Home Food Preservation says moldy dried food should be discarded. NCHFP dried-food storage guidance
If you find water droplets inside the bag, unexpectedly wet berries, a suspicious smell or possible mold, stop using the pack. For a newly purchased bag, photograph the problem and contact the seller or manufacturer with its lot number. Do not assume every sticky clump is the harmless kind described in a brand's FAQ.
What are the signs that you should throw them away?
Discard berries with suspected mold or a clearly abnormal odor. Don't pick out a few fuzzy berries and treat the rest of that packet as cleared for eating. Food can be unsafe without an obvious change in appearance or smell, so a normal-looking handful is not proof that the pack is safe. FDA food-storage advice
Also discard a pack containing insects, larvae or silk-like webbing. Check the nearby dry foods and clean the storage area so an infestation does not spread. University of Minnesota Extension pantry-pest guidance
Natural marks can make goji berries difficult to inspect. Navitas says some blue-green flecks on its berries are attached leaf material, while small white marks at the ends can be former stem attachments. But color alone cannot tell you what an unfamiliar patch is. If you cannot distinguish a normal feature from mold, do not eat them while you seek the manufacturer's advice. Navitas explanation of goji color variations
Do not taste a questionable berry to test it.
Can you eat dried goji berries past the best-before date?
A best-before or best-by date is generally about quality, rather than a point when the food automatically becomes dangerous. In the United States, FDA supports using “Best if Used By” to describe peak flavor and quality. FDA date-label guidance
Still, the date cannot tell you what happened to the package in storage. There is no reliable extra number of weeks that applies to every past-date bag. Check the brand's instructions, whether the seal remained intact and whether you know its storage history. A manufacturer may help decode an unreadable date, but cannot erase poor storage. If you cannot establish that the berries were stored properly, do not rely on their appearance to clear them for eating.
How to store the next bag well
Choose an intact package and keep the berries in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place. Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety gives that advice specifically for dried goji berries. CFS goji-berry storage advice
- Close the pouch properly after each use. Transfer the berries to a dry jar if the closure no longer works.
- Keep the bag away from steam, the sink and direct sunlight.
- For a large pack, separate a small working portion so you do not expose the entire supply each time.
- Keep the label or a photograph of it, including the lot number, storage directions and date.
Repeated opening exposes dried fruit to air and moisture. Smaller portions help limit that exposure. NCHFP
Can you freeze them?
Freezing is an option for longer storage of dried foods, using tightly closed, freezer-suitable packaging. University of Minnesota Extension notes that cold storage extends dried-food shelf life. It does not give a goji-specific freezer period, so do not assume freezing adds a fixed extra year to your bag. University of Minnesota Extension
What if you have already soaked them?
The dry-storage periods above no longer apply. Only soak the portion you intend to use, and do not return wet berries to the dry supply. CFS advises using soaked goji berries as soon as possible because bacteria can grow. CFS
