Leftovers & Food Safety · FAQ

Is it safe to eat food past its expiration date?

Reviewed 2026-07-24

Most U.S. package dates—including “Best if Used By,” “best-by,” “sell-by,” and usually “use-by”—describe quality, not the moment food automatically becomes unsafe. Infant formula is the federal exception; also discard recalled, temperature-abused, damaged, or spoiled food.
